About Pineland
Pineland sits on the western side of Pine Island, where the Calusa built a major settlement out of shell, water, and time. The Pineland Site Complex includes shell mounds and an engineered central canal, and the Randell Research Center's Calusa Heritage Trail runs through the archaeological landscape. The site was occupied for at least 2,000 years before European arrival, making the mounds part of the place you see today. A small post office adds a modern counterpoint: Pineland is a mail stop beside a major Calusa archaeological site.
