About Pinetown
Pinetown is a Beaufort County CDP founded in 1893 as company housing for workers in the county's lumber economy. Surry Parker's machinery shop grew into a larger industrial complex with a mill foundry, patent office, dry kiln, and other buildings; by the early 1900s, the town also had a graded school, churches, stores, a hotel, depot, and post office. None of Parker's industrial buildings stand today, but Pinetown's local map still reflects a settlement built around timber, drainage, and transport in the Coastal Plain.
