About Pinole
Pinole's older center and its Interstate 80 shopping district reveal two different eras of East Bay growth. The Lisjan Ohlone people lived along this part of the San Pablo Bay shoreline, with the Pinole area in Huchiun territory. In 1823, Ignacio Martínez received the 17,000-acre Rancho El Pinole land grant. A trading facility and wharf followed in the 1850s, and the railroad's 1878 arrival helped turn the town into a service center for the nearby California Powder Works in Hercules. Queen Anne and Italianate cottages and early commercial buildings remain grouped in Old Town around Tennent and San Pablo avenues. Later highway-era retail concentrated along Fitzgerald Drive and around Pinole Vista.

Between those districts and the bay, Pinole had 19,022 residents at the 2020 census. Fernandez Park functions as Old Town's main public gathering space. Its six acres contain a lighted baseball field, basketball and volleyball courts, gazebo, picnic areas, and the start of a paved route following Pinole Creek toward the San Francisco Bay Trail. The city uses the park and adjoining streets for the annual Earth Walk, classic car show, Pride and Juneteenth celebration, outdoor programs, and other community events. The Youth Center sits beside the park and runs school-break camps, sports, enrichment classes, and a summer meal program.

A separate Senior Center serves more than 1,000 participants in a typical year through weekday lunches, exercise and arts classes, games, food distributions, and social programs; several evening fitness classes are open to the wider community. WestCAT Route J supplies an important connection beyond the city, linking Pinole stops with Hercules and El Cerrito del Norte BART. This network is modest but coherent: Old Town, Fernandez Park, youth programming, the creek-and-bay walking route, and regional buses sit close together, while the larger retail district remains oriented to I-80 and car travel.
