Pisgah, AL

Pisgah sits on the western edge of Sand Mountain in Jackson County, above the Tennessee River valley. Settlers arrived in the 1830s, a post office opened in 1878, and the town incorporated in 1947. Early mountain commerce depended on timber and a cable-powered incline railway that moved freight up and down the escarpment. That older story still shows why Pisgah's roads and businesses gather on the ridge instead of beside the river.

Pisgah High School is one of the town's defining institutions. The school grew from church-supported academies and a district organized in 1900, and the town describes it as Jackson County's longest continuously operating high school. County Road 58 and State Route 71 connect Pisgah with Section, Henagar, and the wider Sand Mountain area. Pisgah Gorge, formed by three creeks dropping from the mountain, adds waterfalls and a sharp change in elevation just southwest of town.
