About Plainfield
Plainfield’s 20-mile trail system works as a second transportation map, linking homes, parks, schools, businesses, and the public library. The north-south White Lick Creek Trail ties together Anderson, Franklin, Friendship Gardens, Hummel, Swinford, and Echo Hollow parks with the Richard A. Carlucci Recreation and Aquatic Center. The Vandalia Trail runs east and west on a former railroad bed, while other spurs reach subdivisions and civic destinations. At the recreation center, daily use extends indoors to pools, basketball courts, exercise areas, a play space, community rooms, and a media center; Splash Island adds an outdoor waterpark in season. Nearby Hummel Park covers 204 acres with walking routes, playgrounds, athletic facilities, a splash pad, fishing lakes, and an amphitheater used for free summer concerts. This recreation network has expanded alongside a town whose 2025 population estimate was 38,574, 11.3 percent above its 2020 estimates base; the 2020 count was 34,625.
Plainfield’s eastern side has a different physical character from its residential and civic core. Indianapolis International Airport lies immediately east, and town economic-development policy used airport proximity and I-70 access to assemble large sites for offices, warehouses, and distribution. The town acquired roughly 1,800 acres of former airport land in 2018, including wetlands, habitat, trails, picnic areas, and a 5.5-acre pond; that property is now being planned as Echo Hollow Nature Park, so future facilities should not be mistaken for amenities already complete. The Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library supplies another year-round gathering place with Sunday and evening hours, local art exhibits, all-age events, and a 2026 summer reading program. Weekly farmers markets on the Plainfield Friends Church lawn added a regular Wednesday stop from June through mid-September 2026. Trails and civic facilities soften a landscape also shaped by rapid housing growth, airport operations, and a large logistics economy.
