Plainfield, WI

Plainfield is a Waushara County village in central Wisconsin, with 924 residents in the 2020 census. The area was first settled in 1848 as Norwich, and Elijah C. Waterman laid out the village in 1849, offering free lots to settlers who would build homes and stay. When the post office opened, Waterman renamed the place for Plainfield, Vermont. The village incorporated in 1882.

The Wisconsin Central Railroad reached Plainfield in 1875, linking its mills, farms, and growing business district to Hancock, Coloma, and Westfield. A 1902 school, the old opera house, a 1901 fire station, and a WPA-era auditorium keep pieces of the village’s civic map visible. The Opera House still marks the village’s ambitions beyond farm commerce. The old school remains a local landmark. The railroad line was abandoned in 1946, but its role in local agriculture and growth remains part of the town’s shape.
