In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the area was largely open farmland known as Manetto Hill. By the late 1800s, local farmers supplied fresh produce, especially pickles and potatoes, to the expanding markets of New York City through the newly built railroad in Hicksville. Suburban growth surged in the 1950s as quiet fields turned into tree-lined residential neighborhoods of split-levels and ranches. You can still catch a glimpse of that rural past at the nearby Old Bethpage Village Restoration, an expansive living-history museum that preserves historic nineteenth-century Long Island buildings and farming traditions.
