Pleasant Hill, TN

Pleasant Hill is a town in Cumberland County on the western edge of the Cumberland Plateau. The 2020 census counted 540 residents. The surrounding country is hilly, with Frey Branch feeding two small lake systems through Lake Laura Dam and Lake Alice Dam. Upland Lake and Lake Alice give the town a water feature alongside its ridges and hollows, while the roads connect Pleasant Hill to the plateau communities around it. It is a landscape where school history and outdoor geography sit close together.

Pleasant Hill's name is closely tied to the academy founded here in 1884 by the American Missionary Association. The school offered liberal arts, agriculture, and vocational training to rural students, and it grew into a boarding-school campus with classrooms, dormitory space, and other facilities. May C. Wharton practiced medicine in town, ran a clinic, and helped establish a hospital. Pioneer Hall now preserves the academy and medical history. Pleasant Hill Elementary traces its roots to the old academy as well. The town's story comes through education, medicine, and the plateau setting, all gathered around a place of only a few hundred people.
