Pleasanton, NM

Pleasanton is a Catron County census-designated place in the Williams Valley between Glenwood and Cliff. The 2020 census counted 97 residents. Mormon settlers founded the community in 1882, and its early history includes Jacob Hamblin, whose 24th child was born there in 1884, as well as other polygamist families who lived in the valley to avoid federal law. The story is part of a larger frontier landscape of ranches, mountain roads, and small settlements connected through the San Francisco River country.

Pleasanton belongs to the Reserve Independent School District, so school, supplies, and county services are organized across a wide rural area. The settlement's physical scale is small, yet the valley carries layers of history: Mormon migration, Apache resistance and conflict in the 1880s, and later roads linking the communities around Glenwood and Reserve. Pleasanton does not have the civic apparatus of a town or county seat; its identity comes from the named valley, scattered homes, school routes, and the historic episodes attached to the place. For residents, the local map is the road through Williams Valley and the longer trip to services concentrated in nearby communities.
