Pleasantville borough (Bedford County), PA

Pleasantville borough, also known through Alum Bank addresses, is a Bedford County borough in Pennsylvania's Allegheny mountain country. The vicinity was settled in the 1830s as Dubbstown, laid out between 1845 and 1860, and incorporated in 1871. A grist mill, mercantile, and tannery were early pieces of the local economy, and the borough still sits among ridges, farm roads, and small communities. Main Street and the borough grid still carry that older town shape.

Mail gives the place its best local wrinkle. When the post office moved from Spring Meadow in 1855, it took the name Alum Bank because Pleasantville was already in use elsewhere in Pennsylvania; the borough kept its official name, while addresses retained Alum Bank numbers. That distinction is still useful when reading maps and listings.
