Pluckemin, NJ

Pluckemin is a village in Bedminster Township, a place name that carries an outsized Revolutionary War chapter. Washington passed through and returned during the winter campaigns; in January 1777, Captain William Leslie was buried here with military honors, and Martha Washington made her first visit to New Jersey in the village. The following winter, Henry Knox established the Continental Army’s artillery cantonment near Pluckemin, where soldiers trained and worked with guns and equipment. The village still sits among Bedminster’s older roads and farms, with the cantonment site marking its place in the army’s story.
