About Plymouth

Plymouth is an Amador County city on Historic Highway 49 in the Sierra foothills, about 40 minutes from Sacramento and at the edge of the Shenandoah Valley wine region. The 2020 census counted 1,078 residents. The settlement began as a mining camp around 1852, first known as Pokerville or Poker Camp, and its post office opened in 1871 before the city incorporated in 1917. Today the old mining-road history sits beside a regional wine-growing economy with more than 40 wineries in Amador County.

Main Street and the surrounding city blocks connect food, shops, lodging, and tasting rooms, while Shenandoah Road and nearby vineyards carry the working agricultural side of the local economy. Wineries such as Amador Cellars, Andis Wines, and Shenandoah Vineyards sit in the surrounding valley, and the wider local circuit includes the Amador County Fair and Wine Heritage District. It is a small Gold Country city with a local street grid and a wine-growing landscape just beyond the town.
