Plymouth, NC

Plymouth is Washington County’s seat on the Roanoke River, about seven miles upstream from the river’s mouth at Albemarle Sound. Established in 1787, the town became a strategic Civil War river port because control of the Roanoke opened a route toward the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad. The paper mill and related facilities shaped the town’s industrial map from 1937 onward, while the riverfront now hosts the annual North Carolina Black Bear Festival. Washington County Early College and the public schools add an education corridor to the town center. Plymouth is an Inner Banks county seat where river, paper, military history, and black-bear country meet.
