Point Hope, AK

Point Hope, known locally as Tikiġaq, is a historic Iñupiat village perched on a narrow spit reaching into the Chukchi Sea above the Arctic Circle. The Iñupiaq name translates to "index finger," describing how the land juts out into the water. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in North America, with a deep cultural heritage spanning thousands of years. Because the point naturally funnels migrating bowhead whales close to shore, subsistence whaling and marine hunting have anchored community life here for generations.

Like most remote Arctic villages, Point Hope is completely off the road system. Small planes provide year-round travel and mail delivery, while summer cargo barges bring in fuel, vehicles, and bulk supplies. Daily life centers on a tight-knit community where the local school, city offices, and native corporation facilities serve as primary gathering spots. Traditions remain vibrant, especially during Nalukataq, a summer whaling feast where successful crews share their catch with the entire village alongside dances and the traditional blanket toss.
