Point Hope, AK

Point Hope, known in Iñupiaq as Tikiġaq, sits on a narrow spit projecting into the Chukchi Sea above the Arctic Circle. The Tikigagmiut Iñupiat have a long cultural history here; the Ipiutak site and older sod-house villages point to settlement reaching back thousands of years. Tikiġaq is commonly glossed as “forefinger,” a fitting name for the landform reaching into the sea. The cape brings bowhead whales close to shore and has shaped the village's life for generations.

Point Hope has no road or rail link to the outside. An airstrip provides year-round access, while barges arrive in summer with food, fuel, and supplies. Tikigaq School, North Slope Borough services, and local shops fit into a treeless grid. Bowhead whaling and subsistence hunting continue to guide seasonal work, and Nalukataq gives successful crews a way to share whale with the community. Point Hope is an Iñupiat city where school, airport, sea ice, and a whaling calendar meet on one Arctic spit.
