Point Lay, AK

Point Lay is a small Iñupiat village tucked along the edge of Kasegaluk Lagoon on Alaska's Arctic coast. Home to around 330 people, it is a quiet, close-knit community where daily life revolves around family and the natural rhythms of the seasons. Everyday essentials are well covered locally, with borough-managed utilities, a health clinic for routine medical care, and Kali School, which serves students from preschool through 12th grade while hosting many local gatherings.

Moving to Point Lay means stepping into a traditional subsistence lifestyle, most notably centered on the annual summer beluga whale harvest that brings the whole village together. Like most Arctic communities, Point Lay is off the road system, so residents rely on small planes for passenger travel, mail, and groceries. It takes some adapting to the extreme northern climate, but newcomers often find a welcoming atmosphere and a deep pride of place along the Chukchi Sea.
