Pomeroy, OH

Pomeroy is Meigs County’s seat, pressed between the Ohio River and a steep hillside about 21 miles south of Athens. The 2020 census counted 1,573 residents. Its narrow riverfront strip shaped everything from the street plan to the economy: coal came out of hills above town, barges carried it downriver, and the Ohio provided the working route. Samuel Wyllys Pomeroy gave the village its name after seeing the river view in 1830, and Pomeroy became the county seat in 1841.

Valentine B. Horton pushed the coal story into industrial scale, developing mines, docks, and a boatyard in 1845 and helping make Pomeroy a river-shipping town. The Meigs County Courthouse, built in the 1840s, still serves as the county’s seat of government, keeping the village’s administrative role visible among the older river buildings. Across the water is Mason, West Virginia, so Pomeroy’s geography is cross-river as well as county-centered. It is an Ohio River village where coal, courthouse work, and the steep hillside remain the clearest ways to read the place.
