Pomfret, MD

Pomfret is a Charles County census-designated place on Marshall Corner Road and Maryland Route 227, with settlement roots reaching back to at least 1666. The 2020 census counted 514 residents. It is not a compact town center so much as a rural Southern Maryland crossroads, with farms, historic properties, and the College of Southern Maryland nearby. Five places in the area are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and Charles County maintains a preservation program that documents historic buildings, landscapes, and archaeological sites.

Saint Joseph Parish gives Pomfret one of its strongest local threads. Founded by Jesuit Father George Hunter in 1763, the parish served Catholics who worshiped in private homes and small stations during years when public Catholic practice was restricted. The present church was dedicated in 1849, and its history also carries the marks of the tobacco economy, enslaved labor, freed families, and Piscataway and other Native ancestry in Southern Maryland. McDonough High School sits near the south end of the CDP, while the old church and cemetery keep the longer timeline visible. Pomfret is a place where rural roads run past layers of colonial, religious, agricultural, and family history.
