About Ponemah

Ponemah is a census-designated place within the Lower Red Lake unorganized territory in Beltrami County, Minnesota, United States. The 2020 census counted 599 residents. Though its name in the Ojibwe language is "Obaashiing" meaning "At the narrows", "Ponemah" is derived from another Ojibwe word baanimaa, meaning "later, after ", as used in The Song of Hiawatha. Ponemah contained a government school for Ojibwe children. Ponemah's local map joins its older history to the places and landscapes that still shape the town today, all within the wider Minnesota setting. The local scoop is how Ponemah's history still shows up in the places people visit, work, learn, and meet.
