Port Barre, LA

Port Barre began as a trading post in 1760, where Bayou Teche leaves Bayou Courtableau. The waterways gave the place its first working identity: Barre's Landing handled goods, steamboats used the bayous, and the settlement took its name from Charles Barre, who was involved in local trade in the early nineteenth century. The town incorporated in 1898, and its location still reflects those port-town origins even as U.S. 190 carries the regional traffic. Opelousas is about eight miles west, and Baton Rouge is reached along the same highway.

Port Barre's recurring November date is the Cracklin' Festival, a Lions Club fundraiser first held in 1985 at the boat launch and later moved to Veterans Memorial Park. The event's parade and pageant keep that local history on the town calendar. Port Barre High School's Red Devils, the public library, community center, medical services, senior center, and churches fill out the everyday institution map. The town sits within the Opelousas–Eunice micropolitan area, but its own story is still grounded in the two bayous, U.S. 190, and the annual festival that grew from the landing.
