Port Deposit, MD

Port Deposit is a Cecil County town on the east bank of the Susquehanna River, close to where the river reaches the Chesapeake Bay. Its long main street follows the water, with granite buildings, old wharves, rail traces, and the hills rising behind town. The river made Port Deposit a transfer point for boats, rafts, and arks, while granite quarrying supplied stone for bridges and buildings across the region. The town was formally established in 1812, but its ferry and river history reaches back much further.

Today Port Deposit’s historic district holds a mix of homes, small businesses, churches, museums, and waterfront spaces. The Tome Gas House serves as a visitor center and research facility, while nearby Rock Run Mill in Susquehanna State Park keeps the region’s water-powered industrial story visible. The riverfront walkway opens views across the Susquehanna, and roads connect the town with Perryville, Havre de Grace, and the wider Philadelphia-Baltimore corridor.
