Port Leyden, NY

Port Leyden sits along the Black River in Lewis County, right between Boonville and Lowville near the western edge of the Adirondacks. The community got its start in the late 1700s as a riverside mill hamlet before growing into an active canal stop in the 1850s. Back then, boats along the Black River Canal moved timber and dairy products out to regional markets, giving the village its name and early prosperity.

The river still shapes the layout of the village today, flowing right through town over a series of rocky drops. State Route 12 runs close by, giving residents a straightforward commute to neighboring towns for work, dining, and shopping. Reminders of the canal days are easy to spot, from Canal Street to the historic Lock 96 marker. Nearby, Port Leyden Park serves as the main spot for outdoor recreation, complete with ball fields, a tennis court, and a covered pavilion for summer get-togethers.

Community life here centers on a handful of friendly, long-standing local hubs. The Port Leyden Community Library has been a neighborhood fixture since 1925, hosting reading programs and events right in the village center. Spanning both sides of the river between the towns of Leyden and Lyonsdale, Port Leyden offers quiet, small-town living with quick access to the Tug Hill Plateau and Adirondack recreation right in your backyard.
