About Port Protection

Port Protection is a census-designated place in Prince of Wales-Hyder Census Area, Alaska, located on the northwest corner of Prince of Wales Island. With a population of 36 at the 2020 census, the small commercial fishing community became notable in 1975 when Zieske v. Butz, a landmark lawsuit brought by residents against the U.S. Forest Service, established important precedents for access rights in southeastern Alaska.
