Port Sanilac, MI

Port Sanilac got its start in the mid-1800s as a quiet lumber outpost called Bark Shanty Point, named after a rustic shelter built by early timber workers. It quickly grew into a port town as schooners and steamers began carrying passengers and goods across Lake Huron. The village’s historic brick lighthouse has stood watch over the harbor since 1886, anchoring a community shaped by generations of life on the water.

Today, Port Sanilac offers a laid-back coastal lifestyle centered around its marina, sandy beaches, and quiet residential streets. Residents spend summers out on the water boating and fishing, exploring nearby shipwreck preserves, or gathering for weekend events at the harbor. Families are served by Carsonville-Port Sanilac Schools, while the Bark Shanty Community Center hosts activities year-round. Larger shopping runs and medical facilities are an easy drive inland to Sandusky, which allows Port Sanilac to keep its peaceful, small-town atmosphere throughout all four seasons.
