Port Sulphur, LA

Port Sulphur is an unincorporated community on the West Bank of the Mississippi River in Plaquemines Parish. Freeport Sulphur Company founded the town in 1932 as a base for sulfur mining and shipping, building housing, utilities, recreation, and civic services for its workforce. That company-town plan still shapes the place: Highway 23, the former administration building, school grounds, and the old industrial site sit close together along the river.

The mine and plant closed in the early 2000s, and Hurricane Katrina destroyed much of the remaining sulfur facility in 2005. Port Sulphur has since carried on through parish government, schools, and community facilities. South Plaquemines Elementary and South Plaquemines High School serve local students, and the Port Sulphur Community Center on Civic Drive hosts gatherings in a parish where storms, levees, marsh, and river channels govern everyday planning. The river remains close. Port Sulphur is a lower Mississippi community where industrial history and coastal recovery remain visible in the same streets.
