Portage, MI

Portage developed from several early agricultural settlements rather than around a single nineteenth-century downtown. Settlers arrived in the early 1830s, and the area took the Portage Township name later that decade from Portage Creek. Corn, wheat, and celery shaped the farming economy; by the turn of the twentieth century, commercial fishing, ice cutting, and resort businesses made greater use of the local lakes. A 33-acre Upjohn facility built in the early 1950s, now part of Pfizer, marked a major industrial shift. Portage formally incorporated as a city on December 31, 1963, and the 2020 census counted 48,891 residents. More recently, an EF2 tornado crossed the city on May 7, 2024, destroying homes and businesses and damaging infrastructure. Portage's recovery page continued to direct affected residents to long-term disaster case-management help in 2026. Parks and trails connect many of the city's otherwise dispersed destinations. Portage maintains 20 park sites and more than 55 miles of bikeways and trails, including a four-mile section of the Portage Creek Bicentennial Trail that is cleared in winter.

Celery Flats sits along that corridor as both a recreation hub and a historical area, with restored and relocated buildings, a pavilion, year-round restrooms, trails, and grounds used for community events. Other seasonal facilities include Ramona Park Beach, Millennium Park Ice Rink, and cross-country skiing or snowshoeing at Eliason Nature Reserve and West Lake Nature Preserve. Portage District Library, which is accessible from the bikeway, extends the public workshop network indoors. Its makerspace stays open during library hours and provides staffed assistance or appointments for three-dimensional printing, laser engraving, digitization, large-format printing, sewing, embroidery, smart cutters, and other equipment. The library also operates a free seed collection and a Library of Things for borrowing tools, games, technology, and crafting supplies.
