About Portage

Portage is a Cambria County borough in the Little Conemaugh River valley, with a name that came from its place on the old Allegheny Portage Railroad. When the railroad opened in 1834, the settlement was known as Foot of Two, a reference to Inclined Plane No. 2; new locomotive technology bypassed that incline in 1852. The Portage Station Museum now occupies a restored 1926 railroad depot, with exhibits on coal mining and railroading. Portage is a western Pennsylvania mountain town where the river valley and a vanished transportation system still set the terms.
