About Portageville

Portageville is a Bootheel city spread across New Madrid and Pemiscot counties, with 2,942 residents in the 2020 census. US 61 and Missouri 162 come together through town, making Portageville a road junction between the farms of southeast Missouri and the larger service centers farther north and south. The name comes from Portage Bayou, and a post office has served the community since 1873. Flat Delta fields and drainage channels set the backdrop, while the city grid gathers schools, City Hall, and small businesses around Main Street.

Portageville School District operates elementary, middle, and high schools, and the local Three Rivers College site connects residents to community-college classes and workforce training. The T.E. Jake Fisher Delta center adds a regional agriculture presence, working across 1,119 acres on crops such as cotton, rice, soybeans, and wheat. Meatte Park and the Rogers Building give the city a place for park-board meetings, sports, and seasonal events. Portageville is a practical Bootheel town where highways, schools, farm science, and shared spaces all meet.
