About Porters Neck
Porters Neck is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in New Hanover County, north of Wilmington. It is mostly residential, with subdivisions, golf-course communities, marshland, and access to the roads leading toward Wrightsville Beach, Figure Eight Island, and the Cape Fear coast. The area also has a deeper local history, including the story of Robert Smalls's shipmate Abraham Galloway and enslaved people who escaped from plantations in the region. Today Porters Neck is best understood as a coastal Wilmington-area suburb.
