Portland, TN

Portland got its start in the 1850s when the Louisville and Nashville Railroad laid tracks through local farmland. The settlement grew around the depot along Main Street, officially taking the name Portland in 1888. Before long, strawberries took over the surrounding fields. During the peak harvest years, farmers tended thousands of acres of berries, loading over a hundred railcars a day to ship fresh fruit across the country. That agricultural heritage remains a big part of the town's identity today.

Today, Portland offers a comfortable small-town rhythm supported by a steady local economy. Sitting just off Interstate 65 near the Kentucky border, the town gives residents an easy commute south to Nashville or north to Bowling Green. Many people also work right in town across regional distribution centers and manufacturing plants. Downtown still holds onto its railroad roots, which you can explore at the Moye-Green House, a restored 1800s boarding house that now serves as the community history museum.

For outdoor fun, most community activity centers around Richland Park. The nearly 200-acre park features paved walking paths, nature trails, athletic fields, disc golf, and a preserved 19th-century one-room schoolhouse. Every May, the town hosts the Middle Tennessee Strawberry Festival, drawing huge crowds for parades, live music, carnival rides, fireworks, and plenty of fresh berries. It is a welcoming annual tradition that brings the whole area together and helps newcomers feel right at home.
