About Portville

Portville is a Cattaraugus County village of 916 residents in the 2020 census, set in the southern part of the town of Portville southeast of Olean. The village sits on the east bank of the Allegheny River, with Dodge Creek running through town into the river. New York 305 and New York 417 pass through the village, giving this river community a direct road link toward Olean, Pennsylvania, and the wider Southern Tier.

Settlement began here in 1813, and Portville incorporated as a village in 1895. The former Genesee Valley Canal reached its southern terminus at Portville, adding a transportation chapter to the river story. Today the river, creek, roads, village neighborhoods, and the larger town around them form one connected local map. The riverfront also keeps the Pennsylvania line close in the local imagination today. Portville feels shaped by water and movement: early settlers arrived along the Allegheny, canal plans reached for markets, and highways now carry the daily traffic.
