About Poteet
Thirty miles south of downtown San Antonio, Poteet is an Atascosa County city in the San Antonio metropolitan area and the birthplace of country singer George Strait. The town's agricultural story starts with Francis Marion Poteet, who ran an 1886 post office from his blacksmith shop. Henry T. Mumme later donated 400 acres for the townsite, drilled an artesian well in 1904, and helped establish strawberries as the crop most associated with Poteet. The city has long carried the nickname Strawberry Capital of Texas.
The Poteet Strawberry Festival turns that farm history into the town's largest recurring gathering. It began in April 1948 and now draws tens of thousands for music, food, growers, and community events. Poteet Independent School District operates the local schools, including Poteet High School, while San Antonio supplies the larger regional network of work, services, and destinations. Poteet's map is a blend of farm country, school routes, and festival grounds, with George Strait's hometown connection giving the small city a name recognized far beyond Atascosa County.
