Pottersville, NJ

Pottersville is a census-designated place split between Bedminster Township in Somerset County and Tewksbury Township in Hunterdon County. The 2020 census counted 467 residents. The Lamington River runs through the village, and ZIP Code 07979 serves both sides of the county line. Much of Pottersville is listed in the National Register historic district, so the local map is made up of older houses, farm roads, river crossings, and buildings that still show the village’s industrial past. Purnell School, a private girls’ boarding school, closed after the 2020–2021 academic year.

Pottersville was first called Lamington and later Potters Mills, names that point straight to the river and the Potter family’s role in local industry. The first grist mill stood on the Lamington, and a surviving day book records sales to the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. The village’s historic district was listed in 1990 for its architecture, commerce, settlement, industry, and archaeology. The mill is gone, but the old pattern remains easy to spot: a river village shaped by waterpower, roads, farms, and a county line running through the middle.
