Poway has a distinct layout that keeps daily traffic nicely balanced. Down on the south end of town, the Poway Business Park serves as the city's primary job center. Spanning roughly 700 acres, it hosts over 500 companies and around 18,000 workers, including major employers like General Atomics, Geico, and Sysco. Because the corporate offices and light industrial campuses stay clustered in the south, the residential neighborhoods to the north remain quiet and open. That northern side revolves around Midland Road, where the community's historic roots are front and center.

Long before suburban neighborhoods took shape, the valley was known in early records as Paguay, commonly translated as "meeting of little valleys." By the late 1800s, a few hundred homesteaders were farming fruit orchards, grain fields, and apiaries across the fertile valley floor. Even after incorporating as an official city in 1980, Poway adopted the motto "The City in the Country" to preserve that open feeling. You still see evidence of that heritage today in the extensive horse trails, generous lot sizes, and rustic architecture.

The heart of that early heritage is Old Poway Park, a green space built around restored turn-of-the-century buildings. On scheduled weekends, volunteers run the Poway Midland Railroad, taking kids and parents on scenic loops aboard vintage steam and trolley cars. Saturday mornings draw a big crowd for the weekly farmers market along Midland Road, where local growers and food vendors set up stalls under the trees. It is the kind of walkable weekend scene where neighbors run into each other for coffee and fresh produce.

When locals want to get outdoors, they usually head up into the hills to Lake Poway. While the lake provides water storage for the valley, it is best known among residents as a great spot for freshwater fishing, pedal boating, and family picnics. It also serves as the primary trailhead for the hike up Mount Woodson to the famous Potato Chip Rock. Between the lake, the shaded playgrounds, and dozens of miles of connecting trails, Poway makes it easy to spend your weekends outside.
