Powderly, KY

Powderly grew out of Muhlenberg County's coal country. The Cooperative Coal Company opened a mine here in 1887, and when the post office arrived the following year, the community took the name of Terence Powderly, the labor leader. That origin still colors the town's sense of place: Powderly sits along US 62 between Central City and Greenville, with the Kentucky 189 bypass skirting the city and the broader Green River region shaping the surrounding landscape. It is a small home-rule city, but its history reaches into the work, music, and county traditions of western Kentucky.

The most distinctive stop is Paradise Park beside the Muhlenberg County Agriculture and Convention Center. It hosts weekly Pickin' in the Park gatherings from June through September and brings together pieces of local memory, including the moved childhood home of country musician Merle Travis, a replica coal-mining town museum, the Coal Mines Shotgun House, and Springridge School, a two-room schoolhouse built in 1935. Those buildings give the park a lived-in sense of the county's past, while the center's horse shows, rodeos, tractor pulls, cattle auctions, and other events keep Powderly tied to the region's present-day calendar.
