About Pownal Center

Pownal Center is the geographic middle of the Town of Pownal, a small Vermont CDP arranged along U.S. 7 between Bennington and Williamstown, Massachusetts. The village grew around Center Street, the old Route 7, where a log meetinghouse came first and the Pownal Center Community Church later took its place. Homes, small businesses, civic buildings, and the church still form a recognizable center in a town whose settlement pattern stretches north and south through the valley.

That older village core has a current administrative life too. Vermont designated Center Street a Village Center in 2018, a status tied to the historic district and to rehabilitation support for a mixed residential, religious, civic, and commercial cluster. Pownal's town offices, library, and local organizations serve the wider town from this network of small centers. Town reports keep that wider network visible. Traffic on U.S. 7 carries people toward Bennington and Williamstown, but Center Street is where Pownal Center keeps its own scale and memory.
