Pownal, VT

Pownal is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in the town of Pownal, Bennington County, just north of the Vermont-Massachusetts border. The Hoosic River forms its western edge, and VT 346 runs through the center toward North Pownal. The river did more than draw the map: it powered early grist and sawmills, later carried woolen manufacturing, and became the setting for the North Pownal Tannery. The old industrial valley is still legible in the roads, rail line, mill sites, and river bends.

Today's Pownal map leans outdoors. Hoosic Bend Trail follows the river, Mountain Meadow Preserve protects 180 acres, and Barber Pond offers another spot for water and wildlife. Pownal Center has a skatepark, while the town forest and nearby Green Mountain and Taconic trails widen the walking and riding options. The elementary school chorus appears at holiday events, and the town picnic brings residents together in the warmer months. Pownal is a border-valley community where VT 346, the Hoosic, old industry, and newer trails all meet.
