Prairieton, IN

Prairieton is an unincorporated Vigo County community in Prairieton Township, south of Terre Haute and along Honey Creek. Robert Hoggatt laid out the town on July 22, 1837, when the old Vincennes wagon road was still the important route through this part of Indiana. The road and creek gave Prairieton its first reason to exist; the modern version is shaped more by its place in Terre Haute’s southern orbit, with shopping, jobs, and the federal penitentiary nearby.

That shift has not erased the local name or the small-community feel of the map. State Road 63 runs through the area, and George and Ida Smith Park gives Prairieton a county-maintained spot for ball fields, open space, and neighborhood activity. Most of the surrounding land is a mix of homes, farms, and roads leading into Terre Haute rather than a dense town center. Prairieton is best understood as an old creek-and-wagon-road settlement that has become part of a larger metro edge: the historic name remains, but daily life now leans toward the city just north of it.
