Primghar, IA

Primghar is O'Brien County's seat on U.S. 59, in the middle of Iowa farmland. The town was settled in 1872 and incorporated in 1888; its unusual name is an acronym built from the surnames of eight early settlers. That origin is still part of the city's civic story, with the founders' poem on the city site and the county courthouse bringing local government into the highway town. Agriculture business remains vital to the surrounding area, so the road carries farm traffic as well as county business.

South O'Brien Community School District formed in 1993 by merging the Paullina, Primghar, and Sutherland districts. Early childhood through sixth grade attend classes in Primghar, while older students go to the high school in Paullina. Primghar City Park sits along U.S. 59 with a shelter house, playground, ball field, sand volleyball, camping sites, and open space for gatherings. Primghar's local clue is the combination of county seat, farm corridor, and a school district whose buildings are shared across nearby communities.
