Prior Lake, MN

Upper and Lower Prior Lake form the physical center of Prior Lake rather than sitting at its edge. The city wraps their shores about 20 miles southwest of Minneapolis, near Savage and Shakopee, and incorporated as a village in 1891. A total of 27,617 residents were recorded in 2020. That lake geography extends into the municipal recreation system: the city reports 49 parks, more than 1,000 acres of parkland, over 80 miles of sidewalks and trails, and two public swimming beaches. Sand Point Beach brings several kinds of lake access together beside the primary state boat launch. In addition to its designated swimming area, it has picnic shelters, a playground, sand-volleyball courts, a fishing pier, day-use boat slips, and storage racks for canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards. Watzl's Beach provides another swimming area at Lakefront Park, reached by a quarter-mile walk from the parking lots and also accessible from the water.

City staff monitor E. coli at both beaches. Lakefront Park changes function with the seasons: when winter conditions permit, it has two hockey rinks, a recreational skating rink, and a warming house. A large share of the 2026 community calendar used these public spaces. Music in the Park recurred across the calendar, the July Beach Party occupied Sand Point, and Lakefront Park hosted a coin carnival, a two-night music festival, a pickup-truck opera, and the December tree-lighting event. Indoor community activity has a similarly concrete home at the Prior Lake Library. Club Prior, the city's 6,000-square-foot older-adult activity center, shares the building and offers social activities, health-and-wellness information, and organized trips. The library's summer 2026 schedule added early-literacy sessions, a children's mystery book club, guest-led storytimes, and programs involving local robotics, fire, and transit groups.
