About Prospect
Prospect is a Jackson County census-designated place on Oregon 62 along the Rogue River, inside the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. It began as a logging town, with a sawmill operating by 1870; the post office first carried the name Deskins before the community became Prospect in 1889, when a railroad was being discussed for the Rogue River corridor. The Prospect Hotel opened in 1892 and remains on the National Register, while the Mill Creek Memorial marks Memorial Day weekend. Prospect is a southern Oregon place where forest, river, and an old railroad hope share the same name.
