About Prosperity
Prosperity is a Raleigh County census-designated place in the Beckley-centered part of southern West Virginia. There isn’t a neat courthouse square to define it; the place belongs to a larger pattern of homes, roads, wooded hills, and small communities spread through the county. Raleigh County grew first through farming and timber, then changed sharply as coal mining expanded, mechanized, and later gave way to a more mixed economy built around government, medical work, trade, and visitors. Its older roads still follow the folds of the hills.
That wider history is close at the Raleigh County Historical Society’s Wildwood House museum and archives in Beckley, where county stories and family records are kept together. Prosperity’s day-to-day connections run outward to the county seat and neighboring communities, but its setting remains Appalachian: ridges, hollows, and roads that follow the land. The name may sound like a promise; the place itself is more interesting as one small piece of Raleigh County’s long shift from extraction to a broader working landscape.
