Pumpkin Center, NC

Pumpkin Center is an Onslow County census-designated place just east of Jacksonville, in the flat coastal plain of eastern North Carolina. The 2020 census counted 1,855 residents. The community sits inside the Jacksonville area, with Jacksonville's schools, shopping, and county services close at hand. Onslow County's map mixes farms, pine woods, roads, and military land, and Pumpkin Center occupies one of those in-between pockets just outside the city.

Camp Lejeune changed the county around Pumpkin Center after 1941, when the Marine base helped turn a mostly agrarian and maritime region into a much more mobile military community. The local fire department is volunteer-run, and the county's community-facilities map places Pumpkin Center alongside the other named rural communities that ring Jacksonville. The roads carry that mix of uses every day. There is no separate incorporated town center to point to.
