Punta Gorda, FL

On Punta Gorda's downtown shore, the Peace River opens into Charlotte Harbor and a chain of public spaces keeps that meeting of river and estuary in view. Harborwalk connects Laishley and Gilchrist parks, while Trabue Park marks the eastern trailhead among ten acres of mangroves and uplands. Laishley's 17 acres pair a municipal marina and boat ramp with an interactive fountain, pavilions, the Wally Stage, and paths for walking, jogging, and bicycling. Redevelopment there began in 2005; market and festival space followed in 2010. Gilchrist adds courts, a playground, picnic areas, and more harbor frontage. In 2026, work there included a new seawall and broad promenades intended to close a Harborwalk gap toward Fishermen's Village. Water also defines the city's history and its exposure to Gulf weather. Punta Gorda is the Charlotte County seat, positioned on the south bank of the tidal Peace River; its 2020 population was 19,471.

The area is within the homeland of the Calusa people, and the name Punta Gorda, referring to a point projecting into Charlotte Harbor, appeared on maps by at least 1851. On August 13, 2004, Hurricane Charley's eye passed over the city and its eyewall caused devastating damage. Rebuilding under stronger codes coincided with Laishley Park's redevelopment and expansion of the waterfront path system. The county's 84.3-acre South County Regional Park includes a recreation center and gym, sports fields, basketball, tennis and pickleball courts, an RC track, an 18-hole disc-golf course, a playground, and a heated pool with a dive well and splash pad. The park runs classes and programs year-round.
