Puxico, MO

Puxico is a Stoddard County city near the Missouri Bootheel’s Mingo National Wildlife Refuge, with a name drawn from Pucksicah, a Shawnee chief. The first settlement dates to 1883, and a post office has carried the Puxico name since 1884. The Puxico Public Library began in 1937 and now operates from a cypress log-cabin building. That building has also served as a school and city hall, so one small structure holds several chapters of the town’s history. The cabin still gives North Hickman a recognizable civic landmark.

Mingo’s visitor center is 1.5 miles north on Missouri 51, putting bottomland forest, wetlands, auto-tour roads, fishing, paddling, and the Swampwalk Nature Trail close to town. Puxico’s school district keeps Homecoming in the local calendar, with the tradition tied to alumni, basketball, goat burgers, square dancing, and carnival rides. The library on North Hickman, the school on North Bedford, and the road to Mingo give Puxico a clear present-day map: town memory, school tradition, and refuge country sharing one address.
