Quantico, VA

Quantico is a small incorporated town in southeastern Prince William County, about 35 miles southwest of Washington. The Potomac River forms its eastern edge and Quantico Creek its northern one; Marine Corps Base Quantico surrounds the remaining sides. That makes this one of the rare places where a civilian town sits inside a military installation, with access roads and the base shaping nearly every trip in or out.

The town’s story starts well before the Marines. English land patents date to 1654, and the name Quantico comes from Pamacocack, a Doeg village name recorded by colonists and linked to the long stream of the Potomac. Railroads, timber, sulfur mining, fishing, and river traffic supported the town before the Marine Corps leased the surrounding land in 1917 and purchased it in 1918. Quantico incorporated in 1927. Today restaurants, shops, and services sit in the narrow space between the base and the river. Put it on the map as a Potomac town with deep colonial and Indigenous place history, a compact business strip, and the Marine base literally wrapped around it.
