Quinhagak, AK

Located on the Kanektok River near Kuskokwim Bay, Quinhagak is a coastal Yup'ik village with strong ties to subsistence living. Getting around out here means relying on small planes, riverboats in the warmer months, and snowmachines across the tundra in winter. The local K-12 school, Kuinerrarmiut Elitnaurviat, is the hub of everyday activity, hosting everything from basketball games and potlucks to local meetings.

The community is also home to Nunalleq, an ancient village site where thousands of centuries-old wooden masks, ivory carvings, and woven grass tools were preserved in the permafrost. Many of these pieces are housed right in the village cultural center, offering a direct look at the area's ancestral history. Moving here means adapting to off-the-road bush Alaska, where daily routines follow the salmon runs, the weather, and a close community rhythm.
