Quinhagak, AK

Quinhagak sits in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta on the Kanektok River, close to the Arolik River and Kuskokwim Bay. It is a predominantly Yup'ik community whose geography is shaped by tundra travel, river access, seasonal fishing, and the long distances between villages. The Lower Kuskokwim School District's Kuinerrarmiut Elitnaurviat serves local students from kindergarten through twelfth grade, giving the town a school-centered meeting point as well as a path into the wider delta.

Quinhagak also holds one of the most revealing archaeological sites in the region. Nunalleq, a sixteenth-century Yup'ik village near the community, has yielded tools, food remains, clothing, and other pieces of life preserved in the frozen ground. The Nunalleq Digital Museum connects those finds with living Yup'ik knowledge and the people who care for the site today. Fish camps, boats, air travel, the school, and the museum all belong to Quinhagak's daily map. The town's story reaches deep into the delta's past while staying rooted in river travel and community life.
