Quinter, KS

Quinter is a Gove County city built at the site of an old railroad switching point called Melota. The 2020 census counted 929 residents. A settlement named Familton began there in 1885 with a hotel, and the railroad site eventually took the Quinter name. Interstate 70 now carries travelers past the city, replacing the old switching yard as the most visible regional connection while leaving the community surrounded by the open country of western Kansas.

Quinter USD 293 keeps the city tied to nearby rural families and farm roads. The school district is part of the town's daily structure, just as the railroad once organized its first businesses and movement. Quinter's map is easy to read: a small city beside the interstate, a school at the center of local life, and the old Melota railroad history underneath the present-day roads. It is a place where the change from rail travel to highway travel is visible in the name and layout, even when the trains are no longer the main story.
