About Quitman
Quitman is Clarke County’s seat along the Chickasawhay River, with Mississippi Highway 18 passing through the center. The city was recognized by the Mississippi Legislature in 1839 and was named for General John A. Quitman; Clarke County’s own history places it between Archusa Creek and the river. Civil War history is part of the town’s record too: Sherman’s campaign reached Quitman in 1864, and the city was rebuilt after much of it was destroyed. The local shorthand is courthouse town, Chickasawhay, Archusa Creek, and a Mississippi community that has had to rebuild its center.
