Randallstown, MD

Randallstown got its start in the 1700s as a quiet wayside stop along Liberty Road, named after brothers Christopher and Thomas Randall, who operated a tavern for travelers heading west from Baltimore. Throughout the nineteenth century, it remained a small crossroads village with a few general stores, churches, and surrounding farmland. As roads improved and suburban development expanded out from Baltimore after World War II, quiet residential neighborhoods gradually replaced the old pastures. Today, Liberty Road continues to serve as the main route connecting the community directly to the Baltimore Beltway and downtown.

With around 34,000 residents, Randallstown is a close-knit community with deep cultural roots. In particular, it has a rich African American heritage that shaped its modern identity. Longstanding institutions like Union Bethel A.M.E. Church date back to 1826, when free Black families first gathered to worship in a small log cabin near Old Court Road. Today, Randallstown is one of Baltimore County's most established majority-Black suburbs, known for active neighborhood associations, faith communities, and strong civic pride. Residential streets branching off the main corridors feature an appealing mix of mid-century brick ranches, split-levels, and newer townhome developments.

Daily routines center around Liberty Road, which serves as the town's main commercial strip. The busiest stretch, between Interstate 695 and Stoneybrook Road, is lined with grocery stores, retail plazas, local restaurants, and Northwest Hospital, a major healthcare hub and local employer. Commuting is convenient, with Maryland Transit bus lines running straight down Liberty Road to connect riders with the Milford Mill Metro station. Whether you are running weekend errands, heading into Baltimore for work, or dropping by the local career center, most essentials are located along this central corridor.

Community gathering spots also play a big role in local life. The current Baltimore County Public Library branch on Liberty Road stays busy with family storytimes, teen programs, and quiet study spaces. Exciting improvements are also underway, with the county developing a major regional hub that will bring a brand-new, expanded library alongside a full recreation and fitness center complete with a gym, classrooms, and creative studios. Between its convenient location, established neighborhoods, and expanding amenities, Randallstown offers an accessible, family-friendly suburban home base.
