Raton, NM

Raton sits right at the foot of Raton Pass in northeastern New Mexico, just minutes from the Colorado border. Home to around 6,000 residents, this mountain town originally grew up as a busy railroad hub and Santa Fe Trail crossing. Today, quiet neighborhoods and a historic downtown rest beneath high mesa bluffs at over 6,600 feet in elevation. Interstate 25 runs directly through town, giving residents a straightforward highway connection north toward Colorado and south toward Santa Fe.

Outdoor recreation is right down the road at Sugarite Canyon State Park, where locals fish, hike, and camp throughout the year. The high elevation brings four distinct seasons, featuring comfortable summer temperatures and occasional heavy winter snowstorms. For larger medical centers, regional retail, and community college courses, residents typically make the easy 25-minute drive across the pass into Trinidad, Colorado.
